Teyana Taylor was receiving the Icon of the Year Award, one of three honorary awards presented on the night. As Taylor prepared to accept the honor, Janet Jackson walked out from backstage to present it to her personally.

Cardi B led the 2026 BET Awards in nominations with six nods and won best female hip-hop artist. Her performance of hits from her sophomore album “Am I The Drama?” closed with something nobody had heard live before: the television debut of her diss track “Pretty and Petty.”
The track takes direct aim at fellow rapper BIA, including the line “Name five” a pointed reference to a longstanding internet debate about BIA’s catalog. It was the first time the song had been performed anywhere in a live setting. Performing a diss track at an awards show, in front of an industry audience, is the kind of move that generates conversation for days.
Cardi B skipped the red carpet entirely, instead debuting a rare red hairstyle for the performance itself.
kendrick lamar won best male hip-hop artist for the 9th time
One record that received surprisingly little fanfare at the 2026 BET Awards: Kendrick Lamar won best male hip-hop artist for the ninth time in his career. That is more wins in that category than any other artist in the history of the award. He also took home a second award on the night, adding to a haul that already included five Grammys earlier this year.

The 2026 BET Awards introduced a new honorary category this year: the Living Legend Icon Award. Its inaugural recipient was Lauryn Hill.

The 2026 BET Awards will also be remembered for Ray J specifically for two things.
First, host Druski called him out on live television. Ray J had previously made public claims about serious health issues that suggested he might not survive. Druski addressed this directly from the stage: “Why you alive? I thought you was gonna be dead… I was praying for you and everything.”
Ray J’s response was to announce to the crowd that he was wearing nude underwear. He then attempted to flirt with the sign language interpreter on stage. Multiple people in the audience were visibly unsure what to do with any of this.
d’angelo’s children honored their father
The 2026 BET Awards also included one of its most genuinely moving tributes. D’Angelo, the legendary R&B artist, died in October 2025. Sunday night marked the first major televised tribute to him since his passing.
His three children Michael, Imani, and Morocco Archer introduced the tribute performance together. Raye, Ari Lennox, Durand Bernarr, BJ The Chicago Kid, and Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton performed in his honor. The room was visibly emotional throughout.
Muni Long also walked the 2026 BET Awards red carpet a significant moment given that she had revealed earlier this year that she underwent an emergency double lung transplant late in 2025. She appeared on the red carpet glowing, telling reporters she was feeling good and focusing on a healthier lifestyle.
