the word ceasefire implies two sides have stopped fighting.
in the iran war of 2026, both sides are still shooting at each other while simultaneously calling it a ceasefire. that tells you everything you need to know about where things stand right now.
How the Iran War Started
the story starts in april 2025, when trump sent iranian supreme leader ali khamenei a letter proposing nuclear negotiations. trump set a 60 day deadline.
the deadline passed without an agreement. israel launched airstrikes on iran. the united states joined. a war began.
by early 2026, the united states had approximately 50,000 troops stationed throughout the region the largest american military presence in the middle east since the 2003 invasion of iraq.
iran responded by blockading the strait of hormuz the narrow waterway through which 20 percent of the world’s oil supply travels daily. american gas prices spiked almost immediately.
The Ceasefire That Isn’t Really a Ceasefire
on april 8, 2026, pakistan mediated a two week ceasefire between the united states and iran. trump announced it on truth social. iran said it had agreed. the strait of hormuz was supposed to open.
it has not fully opened.
since the ceasefire was declared, both sides have violated it repeatedly. us destroyers have launched what the pentagon calls “self defense strikes” after coming under attack. iran has continued drone attacks on gulf neighbors the united arab emirates intercepted two iranian drones, qatar condemned a drone attack that struck a cargo ship in its waters, and kuwait said its air defenses had encountered hostile drones.
trump extended the ceasefire once in april to allow iran more time to submit a formal peace proposal. iran submitted that proposal last week.

What Iran Proposed And Why Trump Called It “Garbage”
iran’s peace proposal included five main demands.
first: the united states and israel must immediately end all attacks on iran and pro-iranian forces in lebanon and iraq.
second: the united states must provide security guarantees preventing future american and israeli military action against iran.
third: iran must receive war reparations for damages sustained during the conflict.
fourth: the international community must recognize iranian sovereignty over the strait of hormuz meaning iran would control who passes through one of the world’s most critical waterways.
fifth: all international sanctions on iran must be lifted before any discussion of iran’s nuclear program begins.
trump’s response was immediate. “i have just read the response from iran’s so-called representatives. i don’t like it totally unacceptable.”
iran fired back. “whenever necessary we will fight and we don’t care if others are happy or not.” tehran called trump’s own proposal a demand for “surrender.”
What America Is Demanding
the united states position is essentially the opposite of iran’s on every point.
trump wants iran to end its nuclear program completely not pause it, not limit it, end it. he wants hard limits on iranian missiles. he wants the strait of hormuz declared open and free to all international shipping. he wants iran to cut off its support for hezbollah, hamas, and other armed groups throughout the region.
in exchange, the us has offered sanctions relief and normalized economic relations.
iran has called these demands a fantasy. ali shamkhani, an advisor to khamenei, said trump’s desired control over iran’s nuclear program was a “fantasy.” iran’s foreign minister said his country’s own demands were “reasonable and generous.”
these two positions are not close to each other.
What the Strait of Hormuz Means for Your Gas Prices
this is the part that affects every american directly.
the strait of hormuz is approximately 21 miles wide at its narrowest point. through that 21 mile gap flows roughly 20 percent of global oil supply every single day about 17 million barrels.
when iran blocked the strait at the start of the war, oil prices jumped sharply within days. american gas prices followed within weeks.
if the ceasefire collapses and iran re-tightens the blockade, economists estimate gas prices could rise another 40 to 80 cents per gallon within 30 days. a full closure of the strait for an extended period would trigger a global energy crisis not seen since the 1970s oil embargo.
Israel’s Role and the Risk of Escalation
the situation is further complicated by israel.
israel has continued airstrikes on hezbollah in southern lebanon despite the ceasefire strikes iran says “blatantly violate” the agreement. trump has told israel to “scale back” its attacks to support negotiations, but israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has made clear that israel’s security interests come first.
on may 20, cnn reported that israel was preparing to strike iranian nuclear facilities an action that would mark a clear break with trump’s diplomatic efforts and could restart full scale war immediately.
iran warned that any israeli attack would be met with a “devastating and decisive response.”
Trump Iran War Ceasefire 2026 What Happens Next
trump has not announced a new deadline. he has not announced a return to military action. he has not announced new negotiations.
what he has said is that the ceasefire is “on life support” and “unbelievably weak.”
both sides are still technically honoring a ceasefire that both sides are actively violating.
the next 72 hours will likely determine whether a real peace negotiation begins or whether the war restarts with no ceasefire in place at all.
